Punjab Govt Approves Malaria Medicine for COVID-19

In a recent decision, the Government of Punjab has allowed the treatment of critically ill patients suffering from COVID-19 using Malaria medicines.

In a recent decision, the Government of Punjab has allowed the treatment of critically ill patients suffering from COVID-19 using Malaria medicines (chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine). The government has procured about 50,000 tablets of both medicines. The decision was taken after the FDA approved chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in US for emergency treatment of COVID-19.

While it was being used in China and USA before, hospitals in Punjab had not started it until the approval of the government came forward. Now, Mayo Hospital has also begun using Malaria medicines for treatment of the critically ill patients of COVID-19.

According to Mayo Hospital Lahore’s Chief Executive Professor Dr Asad Aslam Khan, initial reports suggest that the drugs are yielding positive results in the patients.

Actions Being Taken by Punjab Government Against COVID-19

The Government of Punjab has not only provided a sufficient supply of the Malaria medicines, but have also rented two 3-star hotels in Lahore to help isolate suspected patients of COVID-19. Permission for outdoor services for suspected patients of COVID-10 at the Mayo Hospital and the field hospital at the Expo Centre has also been granted.

The Expo Center houses 1,000 beds and will begin to function after the recruitment of 1,900 doctors, nurses and paramedics. Mayo’s Chief Executive, Dr Khan, has been appointed as the administrator of the Expo Center Hospital. According to him, the hospital is divided into 3 parts.

Two portions of the hospital will be utilised to isolate mild and severe cases of COVID-19. However, the third portion will be used for seriously ill patients, he stated, adding that a 50-bed high dependency unit had also been made fully functional with ventilators.

“We have deputed highly trained medics and other staff for triage site at the Expo Centre, while Rescue 1122 has been hired to shift patients to this facility from all over the province,” he added.

He further claimed that the Mayo Hospital OPD has become the largest set-up for COVID-19 in Punjab with 500 more beds added to the isolation and quarantine wards here. The patients testing positive at the OPD here would be shifted to the Expo Centre Hospital, he added.
