Sanofi Expects Approval for Potential COVID-19 Vaccine by Early 2021
Sanofi announced on June 23 that they are expecting the approval for their potential COVID-19 vaccine by the first half of 2021 with GSK's help.
Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical company, announced on June 23 that they are expecting the approval for their potential COVID-19 vaccine by the first half of 2021. They have been developing this vaccine with the help of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which is based in England.
Initially, Sanofi and GSK believed that the COVID-19 vaccine will be available in the second half of 2021, however now they have offered an accelerated time frame. When asked about the time frame, Sanofi research chief John Reed stated, “We are being guided by our dialogue with regulatory authorities.”
While many pharmaceutical companies made waves in March by announcing human trials, Sanofi Chief Executive Paul Hudson did not think that they were close to gaining victory in the race to create the vaccine.
“There are companies moving faster, but let us be brutally clear, speed has three downsides. They are using existing work, in many cases done for SARS; it is likely not to be as efficacious, and there is no guarantee on supply in large volumes.”
Similarly, GSK’s Chief Medical Officer stated that they were looking for quality over speed.
Currently, Sanofi is working on two vaccines; one uses an adjuvant made by GSK to potentially boost its effectiveness, while the other is being developed with Translate Bio Inc and relies on a different technology known as mRNA, similar to the Moderna approach.
The trials for the vaccine being developed with GSK are to start in September. The trials for the mRNA vaccine will be done near the end of the year.
