Saudi Arabia Will Have Its First Women’s Football League

In what is considered to be earth shattering news, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of its first women's football league.

Saudi Arabia is notoriously known around the world for being extremely patriarchal and misogynistic. However, recent news suggest that the times are changing.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has announced the launch of the country’s first women’s football league. The news is considered to be monumental in a country where women’s sports is highly discouraged.

According to a recent statement given by the federation, they said that the tournament will be held on 22nd November. They also said that the league will be divided into two phases.

Saudi Arabia announces the launch of its first women's football league.

The first phase will see sixteen teams play matches in three main cities; Dammam, Jeddah and Riyadh. Six teams from Jeddah and Riyadh will participate while only four from Dammam.

The second phase will happen next year in which the teams that qualify will play in a knockout competition. This stage of the tournament will be held in Jeddah at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

According to a recent statement by the head of the federation, Yaseer Al-Mishal, the rules and regulations have already been emplaced.

The news is just a latest in a series of reforms taken by the government to help transform Saudi Arabia into a more modern and progressive nation. Women’s rights and emancipation is just one aspect of this vision.
