SEPA Shows Up to 40% Less Air, Noise Pollution in Karachi

The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency's (SEPA) data suggests that Karachi is facing up to 40% less air and noise pollution.

Since the lockdown started, we have observed many areas seeing a better air quality index and less pollution. One such example was the fall in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s air pollution. Now, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency’s (SEPA) data suggests that Karachi is facing up to 40% less air and noise pollution.

On June 5, the officials stated that the improved pollution levels were concluded after comparison with data collected using the same parameters now as before the lockdown was enforced. This collected data will be shared with all stakeholders to convince them to enforce relevant SOPs. This is to maintain the improved environmental conditions throughout Karachi.

According to data collected by SEPA from Karachi’s six districts during the lockdown in April 2020, the average particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) was reduced by 39% in comparison to the same data taken in February 2020. Likewise, SEPA also suggests that noise level in the city also improved by 19% during the lockdown.

One of the many reasons for pollution in Karachi is the high count of vehicle, that lead to both air and noise pollution!

Data below shows how much the air and noise pollution in Karachi’s six districts were impacted:

  • Central – Air quality improved by 8%, whilst noise pollution improved by 42%
  • South – Air quality improved by 40%, whilst noise pollution improved by 15%
  • East – Air quality improved by 61%, whilst noise pollution improved by 20%

The meeting was convened by the provincial secretary of the environment, climate change and coastal development department, Khan Muhammad Mahar, and was co-chaired by SEPA Director-General Naeem Ahmed Mughal.

We hope that the improvements highlighted by SEPA in air and noise pollution in Karachi stay with us for the long term and that together we can tackle all the issues, including but not limited to COVID-19 and climate change, successfully.
