Textbook Board Chief to be appointed by March 19

Chief Secretary warned by SHC to appoint Textbook Board Chief by March 19

In March 2018, Sindh High Court (SHC) had directed both Chief Secretary and the Education Secretary to appoint the chairman and members of the Sindh Textbook Board (STBB) within a month.

An application for the contempt of court was filed by Mohammed Yaqoob Chandio against Chief Secretary, Secretary School Education. Advocate Haider Imam Rizvi, the lawyer for the plaintiff submitted that the respondents have not complied with the order. He pleaded to initiate contempt proceedings against the respondents – it has been two years since the initial directive to appoint the Chairman and Members of the Sindh Textbook Board.

Later on, the Secretary of School Education and Literacy Department, filed an explanation. The Additional Secretary of the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department (SGA&CD) also attended.

The two judge bench led by Justice Nadeem Akhtar stated that it was clear that the Chief Secretary along with the Education Secretary had not complied with the 2018 directive. This happened only after hearing both of the parties.

Furthermore, the court clarified that action would be taken against both the School Education Secretary and Additional Secretary – SGA&CD, along with the Sindh Chief Secretary if the Chairman for the Sindh Textbook Board.
