The Queen of My Dreams is Going to Have Its World Premiere In Toronto

In the movie The Queen of My Dreams, a Pakistani girl embarks on a trip with Bollywood influences after mourning her dad.

The acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival will host the much-anticipated world premiere of Pakistan and Canada’s multicultural comic film The Queen of My Dreams on September 8, 2023.

The movie, which Fawzia Mirza both directed and wrote, has an engaging and tragic plot. The story’s lead character is a Pakistani woman named Azra who lives in Toronto and discovers herself in conflict with the traditional values supported by her mother. Azra’s journey is motivated by her father’s tragic death while visiting Pakistan and is a combination of natural and made-up memories. Her trip includes themes reminiscent of Bollywood movies and ranges from her mother’s early experiences in Karachi through Azra’s own formative years in rural Canada.

Amrit Kaur from HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, Nimra Bucha from Ms. Marvel, and Hamza Haq from CTV’s Transplant are just a few of the well-known actors in the ensemble group. In addition to these notable performers, the film also features Gul e Rana, Ali A. Kazmi, Meher Jaffri, Bakhtawar Mazhar, and Adnan Jaffar. The director conveyed her feelings, revealing that it had always been a lifelong goal to make a major film in Pakistan.

The movie is the result of an unusual cross-border partnership between Canadian producers Jason Levangie, Marc Tetreault, and Andria Wilson Mirza and Pakistani producers Kamil Chima and Carol Noronha. The project required a 10-day period in Nova Scotia, Canada, and a 30-day filming in Karachi in 2022. Under the supervision of Canadian filmmaker Matt Irwin along with production architect Michael Pierson, the film’s visual elements were expertly brought to life. The film’s style benefited from collaborations with Karachi-based artists Cyrus Kyranjia and Imran Naeem, Fizza Ejaz and Faiz Rohani, and Minahil Chima and Nanson Gill.

Several Canadian organisations, such as the Canadian Media Fund, Telefilm Canada, Screen Nova Scotia, the Province of Ontario, the Province of Nova Scotia, and the Federal Government of Canada, contributed to the film’s funding. Along with Farjad Akhtar and Ameer Hamza, In Flames producer Anam Abbas also serves as The Queen of My Dreams’ Executive Producer.

The upcoming debut of the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival is a huge step forward for the filmmakers and promises viewers a unique cinematic experience that transcends barriers of culture and location. The Queen of My Dreams is just another achievement for Pakistani culture as it continues to forge a road towards international acclaim.
