Third Building Collapses in Karachi This Month

Workers of the Noor Silk Mill’s factory are stuck in the debris of the collapsed building. The incident took place during the lunch & prayer break in the SITE area.

In Karachi’s Sindh Industrial & Trading Estate (SITE), a factory has collapsed as per a police report. The collapse resulted in many injured while others are speculated to be trapped underneath the debris.

According to the police report, the accident took place near the Simens Chowrangi in the Noor Silk Mill’s factory and now rescuers on their way to save those trapped in the wreckage.

Ayaz Khan, the SITE Station House Officer (SHO) has reported that at least two workers have been rescued and shifted to the hospital. Due to prayer and lunch break, some workers were inside the factory while the rest were outside, the SHO added. Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah has acknowledged of the accident and has directed Suhail Rajput, Karachi Commissioner to put the relevant authorities on high alert as saving the stuck labourers is the top priority.

The investigation is underway and rescuers are working on extricating those stuck in the rubble.

While this truly is horrifying news, it’s worrying in the aspect that earlier on this month, a building in Karachi’s Lyari area collapsed, injuring 10 people and taking the lives of 2 away. Moreover, another building in the Korangi area collapsed where 4 people were killed by the incident.
In June, a 5-storey building collapsed resulting in the death of 22 people whereas in March, in the Gulbahar area, 27 people were killed after another building collapsed.

These abnormal number of incidents are alarming and horrifying to the nation. The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) is under fire and is being forced to redesign their strategies as the nation cannot afford to keep losing its citizens to such negligence.
