The South DIG, Sharjeel Kharal mentioned that the three children, 11-year-old Aiza, eight-year-old Saad and two-year-old Safa, were living near Allah Rakha Park. They began feeling sick around 6 in the morning, which was when they were first taken to the Kharadar General Hospital.

The doctors had cleared them after the medical examination and the children were able to come back home. However, they got sick again and had to be taken to hospital again. Unfortunately, this time the children were declared dead.

“While two of them were declared dead on arrival [at the hospital], one was referred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre so that she could be put on a ventilator but she, too, died on the way,” the DIG said.

Kharadar Police Station SHO Ahsan Zulfiqar stated that the children’s father had been out of Karachi when they died from food poisoning. The other family members told the police that the children had bought and eaten some food from outside as well as ate the home-cooked food. It was after this that the children fell sick.

However, the SHO also added that the family was not fully cooperating in carrying out the investigation any further. They were refusing to take any legal action, and the police were left insisting that they be at least given samples of food that the children had consumed. The police suspects that the food could have poisoned by an insecticide being sprayed in the house, and testing the food at the lab would confirm whether that is the cause of death or not.

DIG Kharal also confirmed that the children’s family did not agree for a post-mortem and buried the bodies without letting police carry out their investigations. But now that the father of the children has returned to Karachi, this case of alleged food poisoning will be carried out under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

May Aiza, Saad and Safa rest in peace.
