Turkey to Pakistan Train to Inaugurate Operations
The Istanbul-Islamabad freight train is scheduled to resume operations on March 4, connecting goods train business of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan.
Pakistan Railways has decided to resume the trilateral container train from March 4 to connect Pakistan with Iran and Turkey. Herein, Pakistan Railways Headquarters has issued instructions to finalise arrangements in this regard.
“We have been informed by the quarters concerned that the container train would start its journey from Istanbul (Turkey) for Islamabad (Pakistan) via Zahedan on March 4. Though the schedule will be reconfirmed in a day or two, so far March 4 is the final date of departure of the train from Istanbul,” said a senior official from Pakistan Railways.
“In Pakistan, ministries of foreign affairs and railways are coordinating with the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Secretariat that is also in contact with the respective departments/ministries of Turkey and Iran,” he added.
The train will reach Zahedan from Istanbul after 180 hours and will complete the one-side trip in 12 days, it is expected to reach the Islamabad dry port on March 16.
Habib-ur-Rehman Gilani, Chairman Pakistan Railways confirmed and said, “it is starting from Istanbul on 4th March.
The train will cover a distance of 6,566 km in the three countries.
In the past, the first train was launched on August 14, 2009. After the inauguration, a total of eight trains were made operational with the last one reaching Pakistan on December 9, 2011 however, after some time operations were halted due to security reasons.
Documentations revealed that the train named ‘ECO Train’ will be operated regularly on Thursdays falling in the first week of every month. The permissible load will be 750 gross tonnes. The train length would be 420 metres.
