Wasim Akram at Karachi Seaview: Need for Change

As former cricket team captain, Wasim Akram, and his wife Shaniera Akram head out for a stroll along Karachi Seaview- they come across heaps of garbage.

Yesterday, former Pakistani cricket team captain, Wasim Akram and his wife, Shaniera Akram, were seen out for a walk at Karachi Seaview. Even though walks near the sea are usually therapeutic and calming, the Akrams seemed to come across just the opposite.

Wasim Akram at Karachi Seaview was quick to take to Twitter to document the insane amount of garbage accumulated at the shore, as he further said that the people need to stop pretending as if this is okay, it is not- we must act against it.

In the video Wasim Akram posted to his Instagram, he says, “It was Monday morning, and I thought its a fresh start, the first day of the week, but I have made a huge mistake bringing my wife to the (Karachi) Seaview.” He further said it is embarrassing for us, as a nation, to be okay with such trash polluting our spaces. No one but the people are to blame for this; Akram urged his audience to change their perspectives and actively participate in ways of how to combat such problems.

Shaniera Akram and Wasim Akram at Karachi Seaview also posted multiple videos on Twitter, documenting the current condition the Seaview was in and expressing the deep sorrow she felt because of it.

“All I see is rubbish and people breaking the law. Shops with piles of rubbish, sewerage tankers offloading in the ocean, Housing blocks looking like they are falling apart because no one wants to paint or fix them. There is no pride any more, Karachi. It is like we have given up caring.” Says Shaniera. She further also highlighted that this problem is not only limited to Karachi Seaview; “It is not just the beach, there is garbage everywhere. It’s on our street corners, our lanes, outside our shops, in front of our offices, next to our schools, dumped on vacant land, outside our homes, on our only beach and it’s in our ocean. We are swimming in it!” she pointed out.

It deeply saddens us to see the condition of the Karachi Seaview. We truly pray and hope the Wasim Akram and Shaniera Akram’s pleas to bring a change in the city are heard and acted upon!
