Weather Update of Karachi And The Rest Of Sindh: Is A Cyclone Right Around The Corner?

The weather conditions in Sindh have been unpredictable lately, however, the PMD has assured that the risk of urban flooding and cyclone has passed.

According to Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfaraz, the threat of urban flooding in Karachi has passed however Karachi is expected to experience light rain till 2nd October and Balochistan will get rain till 3rd October. The cyclone threat is also less now.

On Thursday, the forecast for Karachi had a threat of the rain-bearing system changing to a cyclonic storm. The low pressure on the Arabian Sea was approximately 250 kilometers away from the region of Karachi and the cyclone was inevitable. The cyclone was also given the name of Cyclone Shaheen which is different from Cyclone Gulab, which hit the Indian Coast.

Last night, a public holiday was also announced due to the extreme rain and cyclone forecast. All educational institutions, businesses, and offices, except essential service, were shut down.

However, now the threat has passed. the depression on the Arabian Sea which was expected to come to Karachi is now heading west and northwest according to the MET’s update.

The MET Office issued its latest announcement at 6 am today, “Depression over the northeast Arabian Sea moved west-northwestward at a speed of 15km/hr during the 12 hours, concentrated into a Deep Depression and now lies centered near latitude 1=23.5N and longitude 66.5E, at a distance of about 160 km south=southwest of Karachi, 140 km from Thatta and 270 km from Ormara.”

The system will further strengthen to a cyclonic storm in the next six hours and is expected to move towards the Makran Coast.

Fishermen have been given a warning and asked to stay away from fishing for the upcoming three days due to the storm forecast.

According to the new forecast Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Dadu, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, and several other areas of Sindh will get widespread rain and thunderstorms all day on Friday and Saturday. Heavy windstorms may also cause damages to the areas.

Government has prepared emergency relief plans from rain and cyclone since Thursday and have helpers in areas where the rain is expected to be heavy.
