Why We Need Aurat March More Than Ever
Khalil ur Rehman Qamar abuses and hurls profanities when interrupted on Live TV
ICYMI, last night one of the biggest controversies hit the entertainment industry. Leading writer Khalil ul Rehman Qamar burst into abusive profanities when Marvi Sirmed interrupted him, on Aaj Ayesha Ehtisham ke Saath. The panelists had been discussing the upcoming Aurat March 2020
This all began when Qamar started ranting about the slogan “Mera Jism Meri Marzi” from the previous Aurat March, calling it a disgusting saying that the Court has taken action against. While he was talking, Sirmed interrupted his tirade by repeating the slogan again. This led to the writer going off the hook and spouting off slurs that undermine women all over the world – such behavior is the reason for Aurat March in Pakistan. What was more astonishing was that the third guest, as well as the anchor, did not admonish Qamar for taking a harsh and derogatory tone, and instead asked Sirmed to let him talk.
The backlash has raised many questions about Neo TV’s and Ayesha Ehtisham’s credibility. The matter of whether men such as Qamar should be boycotted or not is also being discussed. The interview last night has burned the fire of Aurat March even brighter and has highlighted the need for one more now than ever. Examples of public figures that spoke out include Mahira Khan, Sherry Rehman, Gharidah Farooqi, and so on:
I am shocked at what I have just heard and seen!! Sick to the core. This same man who abused a woman on tv is revered and given project after project because of what? We are as much to blame if not more for perpetuating this thinking! #khalilurrehmanqamar

I will not accept any show on @NeoTv_Network until this anchor apologises and this abusive man boycotted. If others ( men and women ) do the same when asked for shows this kind of disrespect to women may not get impunity. Women’s rights are human rights. Enough of this nonsense https://t.co/YAJlmawCXF

It only reflected what millions of women undergo in their houses &other places of existence. It only affirmed how important is #AuratMarch2020 Say NO to abusive, aristocratic, manipulative male mindset. In solidarity with @marvisirmed MERA JISM MERI MARZI ✊🏼 #understandtheslogan

Where are the celebrities that have worked with Qamar in the past, and why are they not speaking up? Why was PEMRA not regulating this interview? People were not impressed even when the Executive Director tweeted out his apology, as well as the host. Will this backlash pressure the media into shunning persons like Qamar?
