Women From Kakapir Lead in Mangrove Protection

In Kakapir, dozens of women are spending their days planting mangroves, leading in mangrove protection as they now cover around 400 hectares of land.

In Kakapir, a fishing village located 15 kilometres left to Karachi, women are leading the race in mangrove protection. Over two dozen women spend their days planting mangroves to strengthen the natural wall against tsunamis.

The women of Kakapir believe that for a secure future they need to work towards mangrove protection which is why they are leading this initiative. One of the women, 70-year-old Sughra Hajani who has devoted herself to mangrove protection said, “It’s a valuable tree and we all need to protect them. I plant them and ask people, [mostly men], to not cut them down.”

The women collect seeds in the months of June and July and spend the rest of the year planting them. The women of Kakapir village have also set up small nurseries outside their homes to sell the seeds and mangrove plants to larger organisations. “So this also works as a means of earning for them. They continually ask us [men] to not cut the trees,” added Abdullah, a resident of Kakapir village.

Rehman Kandhro, head of WWF-P’s wetland centre in the area stated that they provide necessary critical information regarding mangrove protection and planting to those who plant the mangroves. He also stated that Kakapir village’s women supervise five major nurseries in the village, apart from the smaller ones set up outside their homes, and that his organisation regularly buys plants from them.

“The role of these women [in protecting mangroves] is commendable,” said Kandhro.

Due to the tireless efforts of the women, the area covered by the mangrove forest in Kakapir is now around 400 hectares. “And the forest is growing further,” lauded Abdullah.

WWF-P director in Sindh and Balochistan Dr Tahir Rasheed revealed and lauded, “The women of Kharo Chhan, Keti Bunder and other areas of the Indus delta have been actively participating in plantation drives launched by different organisations. So much so, that now even government agencies prefer to get help from women for planting mangroves.”

Around 74,000 mangrove saplings have been planted since January in attempts of mangrove protection.
