Indian Media’s False Allegations of Civil War in Karachi

Government officials have taken note of the Indian media's absurd allegations of a 'civil war' in Karachi & have called out Twitter to take action.

Pakistani users and other government officials took note of the absurd allegations circulating on Twitter from the Indian media stating the breakout of a civil war in Karachi. Fake viral footage and news stories were widely shared by the Indian media purportedly portraying a civil war in Karachi between the army and Sindh’s police force.

A partnership channel of India’s TV18 and CNN InternationalCNN NEWS18 went too far with allegations and published a story claiming that “a martial law has been imposed in Sindh”. However, it was soon deleted but the outlet continued to promote stories indicating the false civil war in Karachi.

The allegations of the civil war in Karachi stemmed from the events on Tuesday when senior superintendents of Sindh police and other officials decided to go on long leave in protest over the October 19 siege of Inspector General House. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari soon contacted Javed Bajwa to order an inquiry into the arrest of Capt Mohammad Safdar. And in order to woo back the police force, PPP chairman, the chief minister and provincial ministers visited the IG house later in the night for negotiations.

Regardless of the Indian media’s claims of clashes and riots, nothing happened and there was no outbreak of a civil war in Karachi.

Human Rights Minister, Shireen Mazari called out Twitter for “deliberately ignoring” Indian media’s fake news on Pakistan.

Ali Haider Zaidi, Minister for Maritime Affairs pointed out how these false civil war allegations were a result of the PDM ‘circus’. He added, “Both social and economic indicators of Pakistan are showing positive signs. The artificially manufactured food inflation is being brought under control as well. Pakistan is on the rise under Prime Minister Imran Khan.”

As the hashtags Civil War in Karachi and Civil War in Pakistan began trending, Pakistani Twitter users shared their own spin on the hyperbole in the form of memes, completely dismissing the hateful allegations.
