26 Killed in Bangladesh Boat Crash

A passenger speedboat collided with a vessel transporting sand in Bangladesh's Padma River. The boat crash took the lives of 26 people.

At least 26 people have lost their lives after a passenger speedboat collided with a vessel transporting sand on the Padma River near the rural town of Shibchar in Bangladesh. This boat crash is the latest maritime disaster to hit Bangladesh and has resulted in five people including 3 three children suffering from serious injuries.

Police officials in Bangladesh reported that the boat crash that occurred on Monday between the vessel the speedboat was carrying about 36 passengers from the town of Mawa.

“We have so far recovered 26 bodies, including a woman. We have also rescued five injured people, including three children,” police official Amir Hossain said.

Hossain said the bow of the passenger boat was shattered when the speedboat crashed into the side of the transport vessel which resulted in it quickly sinking.

Rahima Khatun, a government official in Bangladesh reported that the speedboat carrying passengers was a violation of government restrictions during a nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

While rescue teams and local people have recovered 26 bodies from the river, the search for those missing is still underway.

Witness Abdur Rahman said there was a loud noise when the speedboat collided in the vessel.

“When we rushed to the spot we found the speedboat torn into two pieces. Hundreds of villagers immediately started conducting rescue work before they were joined by police and the fire brigade,” he said.

Maritime accidents like this boat crash are common occurrences in Bangladesh due to poor maintenance, lax safety standards at shipyards, and overcrowding.
