Journalist Sajid Hussain Baloch - the chief editor of the online magazine Balochistan Times - has been reported missing in Sweden for a month now.

Sajid Hussain Baloch | Sajid Baloch from terra incognitaJournalist Sajid Hussain Baloch – the chief editor of the online magazine Balochistan Times – has been reported missing in Sweden for a month now. His editorial board claimed on Saturday (March 28th) that he has been missing since March 2, and was added to Missing Person Database in Sweden on March 5. Wajid, his brother, further revealed that they had waited 14 days to check if Sajid was in a quarantine for COVID-19.

Sajid had previously worked with The News and Daily Times while he was in Karachi. The Kech-born journalist had left Pakistan around 2012, when he received some death threats for working on enforced disappearances in Balochistan. His report then had revealed a drug lord named Imam Bheel. His wife Shehnaz further claimed:

“Then some people broke into his house in Quetta when he was out investigating a story. They took away his laptop and other papers too. After that he left Pakistan in September 2012 and never came back.”

One of his friends in Sweden, Taj Baloch, saw him a day before he allegedly disappeared. According to Taj, everything had seemed fine, but next day Sajid had stopped returning calls and his phone was turned off. He was last heard from at the hostel office getting the keys for his room, promising to call back.

The Swedish Police cannot invade people’s privacy, especially if they decide to go into isolation. Only after filing a case with an NGO there called Missing People and urging the police to take an action, this case was registered. His family is confused about how a nation that has as free a media as Sweden does could have a journalist missing. They do, however, trust the Swedish Police to take proper actions and “not deny them justice”.
