Covax Delivers Its First Vaccine To Ghana

Ghana has become the first country to receive the coronavirus vaccine through the Covax vaccine sharing initiative.

Covax, a scheme set up by the World Health Organization(WHO) is a global initiative aimed at providing equal access to Covid-19 vaccines to try to prevent poorer countries from being pushed back at the queue. The program hopes to deliver more than two billion doses to people in 190 countries in less than a year and ensure that 92 poorer countries receive access to vaccines at the same time as the 98 wealthier countries. Ghana has become the first country to receive the vaccine through the Covax vaccine sharing initiative.

A total of 600,000 doses of the vaccine Astra Zeneca arrived at Accra, Ghana’s capital city. The arrival of the vaccines in Ghana is deemed critical in bringing the pandemic to an end. West African countries have recorded about 80,7000 cases of the virus.

According to WHO and Unicef, the shipment represented part of the first wave of Covid vaccines headed to several low and middle-income countries. However, Covax has faced criticism for not speeding up the process, one of the WHO board members claimed that the process to secure vaccine deals and deliver doses to countries has been relatively slow.

A joint statement on Wednesday said the shipment to Ghana represented “the beginning of what should be the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history”.
