Germany Launches Smartwatch App to Monitor COVID-19 Spread

Germany has launched a smartwatch app that can help in monitoring COVID-19. The public health authority collaborated with a startup called Thryve to launch the app. It will help in monitoring the disease by making symptomatic people wear it. It will also help in analyzing whether the measures being taken to control the pandemic are worth it or not.

The app is called Corona Data Donation. The reason behind calling it a donation app is because symptomatic volunteers will be gathered and asked to wear the smartwatch. This app will then use those volunteers to collect data regarding the spread of COVID-19. It’s similar to a fitness tracker as it will gather data such as pulse, temperature and sleep.

Lothar Wieler, head of the Robert Koch Institute that is coordinating Germany’s coronavirus response, said:

“If the sample is big enough to capture enough symptomatic patients, that would help us to draw conclusions on how infections are spreading and whether containment measures are working,”

Germany stands on the fifth in terms of the number of cases reported worldwide. The cases reported in Germany as 107,663 and total deaths are 2,016. The germans have made sure to utilize their technology in the best possible way as their death rate is surprisingly low compared to the other countries on top.

The Corona Data Donation app is available for download on both, App Store and Play Store. The data would be processed anonymously and voluntarily. It was developed within four weeks, keeping the current situation in mind.
