Gomal University Fines Students for Listening to Music

The Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has imposed a fine of PKR5,000 fine on two students for listening to music

The Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has imposed a fine of PKR5,000 fine on two students for listening to music while classes were taking place.

The two students were in Gomal University’s Institute of Computing and Information Technology (ICIT) Department.

As per reports, the Chairman of Gomal University’s ICIT Department, Zia ud Din, said that the two students were playing music on a Bluetooth speaker in a teaching area of the campus. He added that their actions, “disturbed the classes ongoing in the department at the time”.

“Both students were warned multiple times to stop [the music] and were fined when they did not [pay] heed to the requests,” the chairman said. The Bluetooth speaker was also confiscated from the students.

The Vice-Chancellor of Gomal University, Dr Iftikhar Ahmed also confirmed the occurrence of the incident and said that “music that disturbs the educational environment” is banned on university premises.

Soon after, the certificate of the fine which had been been given to the students began making rounds on social media where the university and its staff were heavily criticised by the netizens.
