Happy 108th Birthday to Saadat Hasan Manto

Born on 11th May 1912, Manto was a Pakistani writer and Playwriter, who passed away eight years after independence. Notable for his strong writings, and he has always been criticized. And he always took criticism positively. Pre and post-partition, Manto was three times called to court for his bold work. Over this, Manto had only one thing to say. “I am not a pornographer but a story writer”.

Manto had a break into writing back when he was 21 years of age only. He firstly wrote a translation of Victor Hugo’s “The Last Day of a Condemned Man”. This was published by Urdu Book Stall in Lahore. And slowly and gradually he started to grow. He came to Mumbai, and became a part of the Hindi Film Industry. During that time, some famous writings and work of his came out. Manto ke Dramay, Teen Aurten, and following by Manto ke Afsanay. While working with the film industry in India, he did screenwriting for three different movies. He also wrote short stories, few of which got called out like ‘Kaali Shalwar’ and many more.

After partition, Manto came to Lahore, Pakistan from Mumbai and did a bit of writing here too. However, that couldn’t go on for long. His drinking habit became a reason for his death, which came following him in 1955. In Pakistan, Manto was posthumously awarded Nishan e Imtiaz by GoP. Moreover, twice, movies have been made on him. Once by Sarmad Khoosat in Pakistan and the other time by Nandita Das in India, The Indian Manto starred Nawazuddiin Siddiqui.

Manto is a legend that will keep living, with his work only. A happy birthday to Saadat Hasan Manto.
