Imran Khan Gifts Karachi 52 Modern Fire Tenders

In efforts to boost Karachi's fire emergency system, Sindh Governor, Imran Ismail on Sunday announced the arrival of 52 modern fire tenders in the city.

In an attempt to accelerate Karachi’s fire emergency system, Sindh Governor, Imran Ismail on Sunday, January 10,  announced the arrival of 52 modern fire tenders in the provincial capital.

The governor was addressing a press conference at the Karachi Port, in the presence of Minister for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Ali Haider Zaidi, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Asad Umar, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Syed Aminul Haq and PTI leader, Firdous Shamim Naqvi.

The governor revealed that the project to bring in the 52 new and modern fire tenders was an initiative brought forth by the Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited (SIDCL) and labelled it “a great gift” for the city of Karachi. Ismail said that Karachi’s fire department would be responsible for the fire tenders. They will come under the ownership of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The federal government would be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the fire tenders, adding that the contract with the supplier responsible for the maintenance is for three years.

According to the governor, the fire tenders were not bought; instead, the project is the result of a “unique public-private partnership”. He revealed that nine trade associations including Korangi, SITE and Landhi trade associations are partners with the government in the project and two fire tenders will be parked with each association.

“Saylani Welfare Trust and Chhipa Welfare Trust will also be involved in this partnership and everyone will have two fire tenders parked with them,” he said.

Ismail said the initiative is a gift from the prime minister for Karachi which was- in his words-  “sorely needed”. Never before have fire tenders been brought in of such modern quality to the nation. He said that Imran Khan himself wished to come to Karachi to hand over the fire tenders to the concerned stakeholders after getting through customs clearances.
