Imran Khan & Sheryl Sandberg Discuss Facebook Investments

In a report by Radio Pakistan, the premier, on Friday welcomed investment plans and programmes in Pakistan. Imran Khan had a virtual discussion with Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg.

Imran Khan raised concerns about the worldwide rise in hate and extremism acknowledging that these hate speeches online must be fought against. The two proceeded to also discuss Facebook’s support for digital literacy initiatives in the country and its work around COVID-19. This will increase Facebook’s ‘footprint’ in Pakistan.

The premier also recognised the power of the social media giant and the opportunities it brings to the youth and entrepreneurs. Other topics of discussion included Facebook’s blood donation tool that has recorded over 5 million people sign up since it was launched in the country. Moreover, the research grants that were awarded this year to Pakistan-based academics was also highlighted.

Sheryl Sandberg’s efforts to increase women empowerment were also spoken about. Her SheMeansBusiness programme is providing training to 6,700 women across Pakistan

The last time the two met was in Davos, Switzerland, in January during a meeting held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. This was the first time Facebook’s investment interests were brought to light. Sheryl Sandberg invited Imran Khan to the Facebook headquarters and he invited Facebook to consider investments to support Pakistani business incubators and help in digital literacy initiatives.
