Is Karachi Ready for the Upcoming Monsoon Season?

Monsoon in Karachi is around the corner and the first rain was experienced on July 12th. Karachites are worried about the destruction it might cause.

Brace yourselves Karachites Monsoon season in Karachi is just around the corner! Previous year’s monsoon rains in Karachi caused a havoc in town, leaving several people in state of despair. If you don’t know already last year monsoon season was a terrible blow to the Karachites. The rain recorded last year was 484mm which is the highest recorded in 90 years and 223mm was recorded in just 12 hours.

Locals experienced broken roads, long power failures, torn apart homes, traffic, and flooded streets which lasted for weeks. Additionally due to the pandemic, monsoon was much harder to deal with.

Relief teams were not able to reach the areas on times due to all these problems and people who had emergencies due to the pandemic and other reasons were not able to reach hospital on time either.

On July 12th, 2021 Karachi experienced its first monsoon rain. According to the weather experts the heavy rain will start from July 15th.

Although it rained for a few hours, some damage was caused in certain areas of the town. Few areas faced power shortage for more than 15 hours and several areas got flooded with water. The flights were operating at the normal scheduled timings however the CAA advised to tie up small planes at the Jinnah International Airport.

Now the officials and locals are bracing themselves for the upcoming monsoon season in Karachi, as predicted. Municipal Commissioner has warned locals and cancelled leaves of all the staff who can help in emergency situations caused by the rain. The administrator of the DMC South District of Karachi has issued warning to all the departments related to the meteorological department. Emergency control rooms are being prepared in the South of Karachi and cleaning of drainage systems is being started as well.

However, a lot of this preparation has only been done in the South of Karachi which leaves a huge chunk of the town unprepared. The rest of the town contains several mud houses and katchi abadis which usually face most destruction during this time. No promises have been made by K-electric for the availability of power either.

So it would be helpful if the Government officials can focus on the whole city and ensure effective pre-planning.
