Islamabad Zoo Becoming Wildlife Conservation Center

After announcing that the Islamabad zoo is set to go under an upgrade, the PM's aide has disclosed that it is becoming a wildlife conservation center.

On Wednesday, 9th December, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, announced the closure of Marghazar zoo only to be converted into an exceptional wildlife conservation center.

Mr. Aslam made the announcement by releasing a video where he stated that the decision for Islamabad zoo to become a wildlife conservation center had come into effect after the second meeting of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) on the 8th of December.

The Islamabad Zoo will further become the Margalla Wildlife Conservation Center. This is part of Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s, clean and green agenda for overall environmental sustainability and wildlife conservation. They further state that the site will be a state-of-the-art facility that includes a well-planned setup.

Once the Islamabad zoo has become a wildlife conservation center, it will be home to several local wildlife species kept in open enclosures for public entertainment, education, and research purposes, the prime minister’s aide disclosed.

Mr. Aslam said: “This is completely a new concept as part of the biodiversity conservation efforts. Spanning over 82 acres in the foothills of Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP) the conservation center will house wildlife sanctuaries, a vet hospital, a rescue and trauma center for indigenous species, and research on the flora and fauna of MHNP.”

The area is already home to multiple wildlife species, redesigning the Islamabad zoo to become a wildlife conservation center will fulfill its national commitments regarding wildlife conservation, protection, and their goals, he said.

“All the available resources would be utilized to develop a facility at the Margalla wildlife conservation center to provide for rescue and rehabilitation to wildlife species in their natural habitat within the national park. It is also part of the plan to rescue and rehabilitate injured and abandoned wild animals as well as treat and feed them for their complete rehabilitation. They would be released back into their natural habitats after their recovery at the conservation center,” the special assistant said.

Moreover, the PM’s aide has promised that once the Islamabad zoo becomes a wildlife conservation center, it will have the best faculty and trained staff which will take the utmost care of the animals and ensure the facility is working at its best.
