Isn’t It Romantic? – Our Thoughts On This RomCom Parody

I’m a big fan of romcom’s and the latest Netflix film “Isn’t It Romantic” basically skewers the concept of the genre. So I was a bit skeptical about watching the movie but let me tell you, it was quite fun to watch and pretty funny too.

Natalie is a cynical junior architect who doesn’t believe in love and is totally against romcoms. When she gets mugged at the New York subway and is knocked unconscious, she wakes up to find herself in a completely different world where everything is super saturated and everyone around her likes her a bit too much. She even ends up with a gay best friend who has nothing better to do than listen to her problems and find a solution.

When Natalie (Rebel Wilson) wakes up in a hospital bed, she is greeted by a handsome doctor and her room is filled with flowers (which she finds is too good to be true). When she gets out, she finds everyone to be in awe of her and people have finally started noticing her. After a series of events, she realizes that she is stuck in romcom hell and the only way to get out is to make prince charming fall in love with her.

Isn’t It Romantic? is basically filled with all the cheesy stuff you would find in a classic romcom (and has plenty of references from Pretty Woman) and at the end of the day it even leaves you with an important message. I’m not going to disclose the message here so that the movie doesn’t get spoiled for you, but trust me it’s a good one.

Let’s talk about Priyanka Chopra and her role in the film. Critics are talking about how she delivers a better performance than her entire Hollywood output put together. She doesn’t have that many scenes in the movie but when she does appear, I feel like she acts like how any other supermodel would. For me it felt like she was acting the way she normally does in Bollywood films (stuff like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi) but is just talking in English. I’m not trying to hate on her or anything, but it’s just a personal opinion.

Getting back to the film, once Natalie enters the romcom world she has it all: the dream job, a mortal enemy, gay best friend, a handsome hunk who wants to pursue her and a best friend who is too sweet and has been completely friendzoned by Natalie. Side note: How CUTE does Liam Hemsworth look in the entire film? (I was drooling, TBH)

To find out the rest, you’re going to have to watch the movie itself. Grab some snacks, snuggle inside a blanket and head over to Netflix right now!
