Jhooti: It’s 2020 and Victims Are Still Portrayed as Liars

Jhooti's trailer shows a woman faking bruises & scars and bursting out with laughter as she compliments her own lying skills. It has received major backlash on social media.

Jhooti is an upcoming drama on ARY Digital that has already received a lot of backlash. After Merey Pass Tum Ho, fans had their hopes high for new dramas but were disappointed when the trailer of Jhooti came out. It’s a drama starring Iqra Aziz and Ahmed Butt. There were two trailers out of which one was fine but the other one was the reason behind major backlash.

The one posted above shows Iqra Aziz, a girl who gets married and is being seen with bruises and scars on her face. We see her crying and talking about her misery, but suddenly she snaps out of the whole scene and starts laughing at her lying skills. It seems like the writer is trying to portray women as liars, which isn’t a very positive image because this disregards all the women who are actually suffering.

In a country where thousands of women are killed each year because of domestic abuse, this drama just seems insensitive. The main character is portrayed as a liar who fakes bruises and lies about her husband beating her. She’s also seen accusing her family of not believing her. From the trailer, it seems as if she wanted to marry a rich guy but the family goes against her will.

This isn’t just my opinion, many others on Twitter have also shared their thoughts and voiced their opinions. Here are snippets of some tweets which stood out and called out the misogyny.

Kanwal, the founder of Soul Sisters was also tagged on the thread where she shared her thoughts too.

People are not happy about this one and they definitely shouldn’t be okay with such content. Pakistan is a patriarchal society filled with misogynists that support such abuse. They’re wired in a way to degrade women and not feel that it’s wrong in any way because it’s normal for them. Domestic violence is not a joke and most of the women going through this ordeal do not speak up out of fear of being called a liar. In a society like ours, Jhooti is the worst type of content to put out.
