Joyland will be the first Pakistani film to be screened at Cannes

The Saim Sadiq film will be the first Pakistani film to be screened at the festival.

“Joyland”! A film that you might not have heard of but you should.

Why you may ask? Simple! This is the first Pakistani film to be screened at Cannes. A milestone that is quite earth shattering for Pakistani cinema.

The film “Joyland” is directed by Saim Sadiq and will be one of fourteen feature films to be premiering at Cannes.

In response to the news, Saim Sadiq expressed his excitement about his film screening at Cannes. In an interview with Dawn, he said; “I hope it [Joyland] generates positivity and good debate at home in Pakistan and around the world because a lot of very passionate people have put a lot of heart and soul into this film.”

Upon the news breaking out, many Pakistani celebs took to social media to congratulate Saim Sadiq for his accomplishment.

One of them is Academy Award winning documentary maker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. She wrote on her Instagram story, “Thereโ€™s a Pakistani film at Cannes this year. Saim Sadiq, I cannot be more proud.โ€

Actress Mahira Khan also congratulated Saim Sadiq in his achievement. She took to Twitter to congratulate the director for his monumental feat.

Osman Khalid Butt also took to Twitter to congratulate Saim Sadiq as well. He wrote; “This is FANTASTIC. What a huge moment for Pakistani cinema. Congratulations, Saim and the entire team of Joyland!โ€

Other celebs to congratulate Saim Sadiq include Adnan Malik, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha and Sarwat Gilani.

Though details of the film have yet not been made public, the director did say that he does plan on telling more about the film in the coming weeks.

This is not the first time Saim Sadiq has made a name for himself on the international stage. His short film “Darling” won the Best Short Film category at the La Biennale di Venezia last year.

The feat is just the latest string in accomplishments achieved by Pakistani artists on the global stage. Not to long ago Arooj Aftab became the first Pakistan singer to win a Grammy Award.

Now the momentum continues on with Saim Sadiq and his major accomplishment. We wish the director as well as the cast and crew of the film the best of luck. Hope they make Pakistan proud on the big stage.
