Lahore’s Toxic Atmosphere: Smog Takes Over

With winters approaching, the environmental department has predicted that air quality in Lahore will be further compromised because of the rise in smog.

As winter approaches, Lahore’s air quality index has displayed very unhealthy results. The forecasts have shown a massive increase in smog as temperatures drop, and there is an increase in manufacturing, such as the burning of stubble and the building of brick kilns in rural areas.

“The AQI status of Town Hall has been recorded at 207. And it is a moderate one, but will be unsatisfactory if it touches 300,” says an official in the environment department. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has been recorded at various spots in Lahore to check smog levels, and some areas displayed terrible AQI results.

Even though the environment department does not see the smog as a pressing issue as of now, they do believe that with the rise of burning stubble and as the harvesters are busy with their crops, it will give rise to the worsening of air quality in Lahore.

“In the next 15 days (till Nov 10), it will rise a lot due to stubble burning in the areas and the neighboring country coupled with the operation of bricks kilns. So, the smog situation would attain its peak by Nov 10,” he claimed.

Moreover, the environment department, in an attempt to control Lahore smog, has issued several precautionary measures; they have said to ban the 7,523 brick kilns in Punjab from Nov 7 to Dec 31. Similarly, the shift in brick kiln technology shall not be operational until next year.

“As many as 695 of 7,532 brick kilns in Punjab have been shifted to zigzag technology. A deadline of Dec 31 was already given through a notification issued on Jan 20 this year. So only those kilns would be allowed to operate after Dec 31 that will be shifted to this mode,” he maintained.

Lahore smog has been a considerably alarming issue for the country, air quality is compromised immensely, making it difficult for a resident to live and tourists to visit. Due to this, the T20I Zimbabwe Series was shifted to another venue, since the atmosphere was not favorable for the players.

The government and concerned departments must take such environmental crises into account and find accurate methodologies to curb Lahore smog.
