McDonald’s is Hiring Female Delivery Riders

Recently McDonald’s Pakistan launched an initiative where the food giant will be recruiting female delivery riders and we're lovin' it!

The lack of equal participation in most blue-collared jobs- mainly male-dominated- remains to be an obstacle in female liberation movements in Pakistan. Herein, McDonald’s Pakistan, aiming at equity, has launched an initiative where the food giant will be employing female delivery riders.

In light of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, customers and governments are avoiding dining in, consequently, food giants like McDonald’s have been relying on delivery services to keep their traffic flowing. As of now, McDonald’s has launched its initiative in the three main cities of Pakistan- Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Although McDonald’s’ initiative of recruiting female riders for delivery is a big and necessary step for normalising female riders on the road in general, however, we cannot turn a blind eye to the street harassment that persists in Pakistan. Back in September 2020, a video of a female cyclist went viral after she spoke up about a man groping her while she was riding her bicycle on a road in Islamabad.

While adapting another notion of our patriarchal society which discourages- in a lot of cases bans- women from taking flight, moving forward or stepping out, McDonald’sinstead promotes these movements by women by hiring them as delivery riders.
