Mental Health And The Importance Of Speaking Up

In a society like Pakistan, topics such as mental health can be taboo. However, this article highlights the importance of talking openly about such topics.

Mental health maybe considered a taboo by many but the fact remains that huge portions of our society suffer from it. Whether it be anxiety or depression, people suffer through various sorts of mental health problems that can affect how they conduct their daily lives.

Often people do not disclose how they feel due to fear of how people will react to their disclosure. For many people, they fear that if they disclose how they actually feel, their friends and families might think they are mentally ill. They might be shamed for it or made to feel worst than they already are.

For men, the situation is more complicated then that. The fear of being seen as weak and fragile by society deters men from sharing how they exactly feel. This constant fear of being seen as feminine by society deters them from speaking up. This can prompt such men to commit suicide.

Although many people in the west have started opening up about their struggles with mental health, the trend is not catching up in places like Pakistan. In societies like Pakistan, people are still hesitant about discussing how they feel. Mental health still remains a topic that is better left not talked about.

However, this has been slowly changing as many famous Pakistani celebrities have recently taken to social media to discuss their battles with mental health problems. Just a couple of days ago, actor Adnan Malik took to Instagram to discuss his struggle with anxiety. His disclosure prompted many others to follow in his foot steps.

Just recently, actress Armeena Khan opened up about her struggles with having an eating disorder, while fellow actress Mawra Hocane also used Instagram to open up about her struggle with anxiety. The disclosures made by these actors help set an outstanding precedent for others to follow.

It helps to eradicate the taboo nature of such topics in the eyes of society. Famous people speaking up about their struggles with mental health will urge other ordinary citizens to also speak up about their ordeals. This will help create greater awareness about the topic of mental health and also spark discussions on how to help those who are affected.
