More than 470 Caught in Sindh during Lock Down

CM Shah had announced a 15 day province-wide lock down in Sindh on Sunday. While most residents follow the protocols, some are toeing the line.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had announced a 15 day province-wide lock down in Sindh on Sunday (March 22nd). While most of the residents are following the protocols, according to the Karachi Police Chief, there are some who are toeing the line.

The lock down in Sindh has curbed commercial and business activities, along with stopping the residents’ movements to restrict the spreading of the COVID-19. Public transport has been shut down in addition. There is a small chunk of the population, however, who have been arrested or held by the police due to the violation of the lock down.

On the first day of the lock down (March 23rd), it was observed in Karachi that the lock down is more effective in big commercial areas such as Saddar, Clifton and Tariq Road. However, in low-income places such as Lyari, Landhi, Hijrat Colony, Sohrab Goth, etc. it was noted that the measures were not as effective. According to the All Karachi Tajir Ittehad chairman Atiq Mir, around 300 markets, bazaars and malls remained closed on Monday.

People Detained All Over Sindh during Lock Down

According to the police reports, around 472 people were held across Sindh. Out of these, 222 were held in Karachi, and 33 out of these cases were registered. FIRs were also registered in Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana; 72 cases were filed in these places. However, no one in Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad was arrested.

The people who were arrested were all violating the lock down by hoarding and making a profit from safety masks and hand sanitisers, along with taking part in large gatherings, opening shops and restaurants and travelling in passenger buses.

DIG-South Sharjeel Khan stated that the Sindh government is not keeping people in detainment as that defeats the whole purpose of the lock down; instead, the people are being warned and released. While the police is mostly letting these people go, SHO Salahuddin from the Civil Lines in Karachi had arrested some people and forced them to frogmarch. The DIG took note of this and suspended the SHO.
