Osman Khalid Butt Made A Deal To Perform In LSA Regarding Feroze Khan

Osman Khalid Butt is facing criticism for going to the awards which are celebrating abusers after which he clarified his position.

Osman Khalid Butt is renowned for supporting female emancipation and actively speaking out against related issues, yet watching him onscreen at the Lux Style Awards offended some online commenters. Stars appearing at an awards ceremony that honoured an alleged abuser was not acceptable to them. The actor chose to speak out and make his position known after receiving a lot of criticism.

He responded on Monday by posting a lengthy letter on Twitter outlining what transpired. He claimed that he was approached a week prior to the awards and asked to co-host a section and pay homage to Nazia Hassan, who received the Changemaker Award after she passed away. This happened before the nominees were made public. “My only reservation — which I made clear before agreeing — was that I could not attend, let alone perform at the ceremony if Feroze [Khan] was present there (which has absolutely nothing to do with his acting prowess, and everything to do with the very serious allegations levied by his ex-wife), and I was assured that he would not. That commitment was honoured,” he stated.

Osman Khalid Butt added his response to the LUX Style Award on Twitter as proof.

Two days prior to the event, the final list of nominees was made public. Butt stated that he made every effort to ensure that there were no contentious nominations during his hosting portion. Osman Khalid Butt described performing the dance tribute as an honour and a privilege. “It is unfortunate that that moment was eclipsed by controversy. I have advocated for causes I believe in for more than a decade, fought battles that have been detrimental to my career in this industry without fear (and at times without advertisement) — and I will continue to raise my voice: feminism is not a brand I wear, it is ingrained in my very being,” Osman Khalid commented.

Osman responded to the criticism in a Twitter post, saying, “It has been incredibly demoralising reading some of the posts on the cesspool that is social media, peppered with lies calling me out for ‘celebrating and cheering on abusers’ (?!), labelling me a ‘bika hua’ [sellout] ‘selective activist/hypocrite’ who raises his voice for ‘clout’. (Someone please let me know how I have benefitted from this ‘clout’). But then I remind myself that I don’t do what I do for your or anyone’s validation. However, one part of your condemnation I fully endorse: do not put anyone up on a pedestal.”

The actor, Osman Khalid Butt, asserted that there is a larger discussion to be had about how the industry reflects the culture in which it operates, about the expectation that vocal artists get fewer opportunities in the wake of a scandal, about the manner in which introduce about genuine, actionable change.  He also informed his followers that the prize for which they are so upset was selected by participants of the exact same culture, as was also stated by the LSAs.

“And that’s a cold, hard fact — but social media is definitely not the place for any nuanced conversation with its culture of misdirected hate,” he added, thanking everyone who had continued to have confidence in him.  “Thank you to my peers and supporters who have faith in my convictions and intentions, and didn’t jump the gun on making judgements without knowing the situation.”
