Parliament House Sealed After Coronavirus Outbreak

With the number of coronavirus cases increasing in the country, The Parliament House recently fell victim to the virus and has been sealed.

The parliament house in Islamabad was sealed on an emergency basis till next week since thirty officials from the two houses tested positive for coronavirus late last week.

The Capital Development Authority has been handed the task of disinfecting the premises situated at the Constitution Avenue on D-Chowk of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaisar, and other officials have been confined to their houses and asked to work from home for the time being as the parliament house is sealed.

Any meetings of the standing committees of the Senate and the National Assembly have either been canceled or rescheduled due to the parliament house being sealed. Sources have confirmed that over 20 officials of the Senate and eight of the National Assembly staff have tested positive for corona, and most of them had been immediately quarantined or shifted to hospitals.

During the first wave of the virus, The National Assembly speaker and his family members were tested positive and they recovered in about three weeks in March-April. The Deputy Chairman Senate, Saleem Mandviwala, was affected by the disease in September recently, he too recovered rather soon.

The Parliament House has been sealed for the second time this year, as it was disinfected earlier this year as well when some members of the National Assembly fell victim to the virus. Moreover, sources have confirmed that one disinfection is complete, the full strength of staff will not be allowed into the offices in the parliament house. Only those who are required will be allowed to enter.

Sources have said that due to a violation of SOPs, the parliament house had to be sealed and the member fell victim to coronavirus.
As most of the members used a mask, but staff and visitors were found violating the SOPs. To tackle this situation, CCTV cameras are being installed within the building to ensure the strict following of the SOPs from now onwards.
