PDM Cancelled for Ignoring COVID-19 Threats

PM Imran Khan and his cabinet members criticised the opposition alliance, PDM for moving ahead with the rally in Peshawar despite the threat of Covid-19.

Prime Minister Imran Khan and his cabinet members heavily criticised the opposition alliance, PDM for moving ahead with the rally in Peshawar, scheduled for November 22 despite the threat of Covid-19 and it’s second-wave in Pakistan.

“The same PDM members who had wanted a strict lockdown and criticised me earlier [are] now playing reckless politics with people’s safety. They are even defying court orders and holding a jalsa when cases are rising dramatically,” Imran stated.

Earlier the Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar sent a letter to the PDM leaders, alerting them of the increase in positive COVID-19 cases in the region. However, the opposition leaders did not give much attention to it. The letter added that a public gathering was “likely to further increase the spread of the life-threatening virus”.

“Safeguard human lives [from the] potential spread of Covid-19″, the public gathering cannot be allowed to take place.”

Instead of acknowledging the threats of the pandemic, the PDM went on to say that stopping the protestors from partaking in the rally by force will spark street battles. Moreover, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar in a tweet revealed Peshawar’s horrifying statistics of the impact of COVID-19’s second wave.

Peshawar covid positivity ratio 13.39% yesterday. Patients in critical care: 202. Of these 50 on low flow oxygen, 134 on high flow and 18 on ventilators. 14 new critical patients just yesterday. PDM response: we will be safe on the stage so who cares what happens to citizens

Asad Umar further highlighted the PDM’s hypocrisy and two-faced approach. “The PML-N government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has imposed a complete lockdown for two weeks. The PPP government in Sindh has imposed ‘smart lockdowns’ in four districts in Karachi. However, both parties are insisting on holding the Peshawar rally.”

Given that Peshawar has been the most pro-Imran Khan city, the PDM seems to be exacting revenge from the people of Peshawar since their lives are being put to risk in for a ‘democratic movement’ rally.

Furthermore, Information Minister, Shibli Faraz also frowned upon the leaders’ irresponsible attitude. “Their insistence on holding tomorrow’s rally is a reflection of their undemocratic thinking and irresponsible attitude. There is no legal or moral justification for moving forward with the rally despite the orders issued by the government and the court.”

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari also said it was sad how the PDM is playing “dangerous politics with the people’s lives by insisting on continuing their rallies.”

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill single-handedly annihilated the leaders and PPP in specific by pointing out how Bakhtawar’s engagement invitation had clearly stated that negative COVID-19 tests were mandatory for all attendees. “You consider your lives precious but why do you not care for the lives of the people when you call them to rallies?”
