COVID-19 has impacted our economy negatively so far, and continues to do so. The Pharma Industry in Pakistan is going to start shutting down some businesses within the next few days as there has been a shortage in the raw materials that are being imported.

Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) Executive Committee Member Kaiser Waheed stated on Thursday, “Just like food, people have started stocking up on medicines as well therefore the demand has surged by a great deal. Retailers who used to buy inventory for one week are now purchasing medicines for the whole month.”

Shutting down of industries has already begun throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because the raw materials are unavailable, according to Waheed. He further stated that small companies have already started to close their businesses in Karachi and Lahore as well.

The active ingredients are not the problem for the pharma industry, as even packaging is facing a shortage in Pakistan nowadays. Other than China, Pakistan imports raw materials from India, and even that is under a lock down until April 15. Waheed said that according to the Indian businessmen, they will not be able to export raw materials until the government allows them to do so and provides them with a permit.

Kaiser Waheed revealed that Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had assured the sector of arranging C130 airplane to resolve the matter against the payment of $156,000 but they did not hear back from him.

Lastly, the PPMA Executive Member highlighted the issues the sector has to face due to the lock down; there are blockages everywhere and smooth supply was very tough.

“Despite the fact that federal and provincial government agreed that pharmaceutical industry was essential and should be allowed to work freely, our workers have been facing hurdles to reach their offices. A few that manage to arrive, are not being allowed to transport the medicines to their destinations.”
