Punjab to Run Drug Trial on Critical COVID-19 Patients

According to Dr Yasmin Rashid, the health minister of Punjab, Chief Minister Buzdar has given approval for running a trial for the injectable drug Actemra on 1000 critical COVID-19 patients.
On June 9, Dr Yasmin Rashid stated in the press conference at the Chief Minister Secretariat that Actemra injections were only being manufactured by one company in the country.
As there is no competition in the market, the government interfered and got the firm to lower the price for a patient’s full treatment down to Rs 102,000. If the drug was to be sold anywhere at a higher price, the government will be taking actions.
As the Punjab Healthcare Commission will be overlooking the drug trial against COVID-19, the company has been stopped from providing Actemra injections to private hospitals without government approval.
“One patient will be given 400ml [of injection] in 24 hours and the next dose will be given in the next 24 hours”, the minister explained. She further warned that without the trials and examining the results, the use of the injection could be harmful for the patients.
“So far only three in every 10 patients at the ICU are reporting improvement,” Dr Yasmin Rashid added.
