Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar has announced that reading the Quran with urdu translation is made compulsory for all universities across Punjab. In the notification issued by Governor’s House, no university in Punjab is allowed to award a degree unless a student has attended the required ‘Quran with translation’ classes.

Following Quran a prerequisite to set up an ideal, tolerant ...

Sarwar made the decision after consulting with all the Vice Chancellors across the province. A seven member committee that is being led by Punjab University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Niaz Akhtar, has been formed to implement the decision.

Lecturers of all the universities in Punjab will recite the Quran to the students and it will be mandatory for the students to attend those lectures. The course will be in addition to the Islamic Studies courses.

When explaining the reasoning behind this decision, the Governor stated that the Quran is the source of real guidance for Muslims. “Only by following the teachings of the Quran can the world be improved. It is vital for Muslim students to understand religion and protect themselves from extremism and bigotry.”
