Renowned Writer, Academic Asif Farrukhi Passes Away

Dr Asif Farrukhi was well known as the director of the Arzu Centre for Regional Languages and Humanities at Habib University, and as a founding member of the KLF.

Acclaimed fiction author, academic and literary critic Dr Asif Farrukhi passed away at the age of 60 in Karachi on June 1. Farrukhi was a diabetic patient, and it has been reported that he was feeling unwell for the past couple of days.

Dr Asif Farrukhi was well known as the director of the Arzu Centre for Regional Languages and Humanities at Habib University, and as a founding member of the Karachi Literature Festival (KLF).

Who was Dr Asif Farrukhi?

Born in 1959, Asif was the son of writer Dr Aslam Farrukhi. Asif pursued hisMBBS from Dow University of Health Sciences. Afterwards, he earned a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University and served as a faculty member at Aga Khan University Hospital from 1985 to 1993.

Between the years 1994 and 2014, Dr Asif Farrukhi worked with UNICEF as the Health and Nutrition Programme Officer. In 2012, he attended a short course on Health Economics and Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr Asif Farrukhi contributed to the literary world by authoring seven collections of short stories and two books of literary criticism. He also published translations of prose and poetry from modern and classical writers. His recent publications included a collection of new critical essays on Manto and Look At The City From Here — an anthology of writings about Karachi. Two of his adaptations have been staged in Karachi.

He was also the editor of literary journal ‘Duniyazad’, which is a literary journal of new writing and contemporary issues in Urdu.

For his work and contribution to the field of literature, Dr Farrukhi was awarded with the Adab Award in 1995 and the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2005. He was also awarded the Prime Minister’s Literary Award by the Pakistan Academy of Letters in 1997.

May Dr Asif Farrukhi rest in peace. His loss is huge for the Pakistani literature landscape. May his contributions be always recognised for what they were. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
