Scarlett Johansson is Suing Disney Over “Black Widow”

Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for her newly released film "Black Widow". Disney responds immediately to it, in defense.

Black Widow -Scarlett Johansson- has a new enemy called Disney.

On Thursday, Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit, in Los Angeles Superior Court, against Disney claiming that they went against her contract conditions. Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney, and Scarlet Johansson had a contract stating that the film “Black Widow” will be released first in theatre and after a while on the streaming service.

However, the film was released on the Disney+ streaming service the same day as its theatrical release. Scarlett Johansson’s suit asserts that a large amount of “Black Widow’s” revenue was supposed to be earned from the box office haul. This stunt by Disney hurt the revenue the film was supposed to get from the theatrical release.

According to sources, Scarlett Johansson suffered a loss of $50 million from this breach of contract. Black Widow earned $80 million in the USA and $158 million globally in box office sales, still making it the highest a movie has earned in the pandemic era.

Disney streaming service is selling the movie for $30 and the viewers can watch it as many times as they want. This brings the revenue of “Black Widow” to $60 million in its first week.

Usually, the contract between the movies and Marvel Studios states that the movie will be released on Disney three months after its theatrical release.

Disney responded to Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit saying “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing” and added, “The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Additionally, In the statement on Thursday, it also added “Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of ‘Black Widow’ on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 [million] she has received to date.”

The suit also records that when Johansson found out about the Disney+ release being the same day as the Black Widow’s theatrical release, she tried to contact Marvel and Disney. But no response was received from them.
