Students Explain Why O and A Level Exams Should Be Cancelled This Year

Twitter is flooding for the past few days as Pakistani students tweet their concerns of O and A Level examinations being held later this year. These students believe that this year has been very stressful for their studies. With poor online learning systems, deteriorating mental health and a third wave of the pandemic, O and A Level students of Pakistan find it unfair to sit for the examinations later in May.
Cambridge International announced that it will be cancelling in-person O and A Level exams in a “very small” number of countries — 10, including the UK — and instead will be awarding students grades based on their teachers’ assessment, or expected grades.
Students across the world have taken to their social media accounts to voice their disappointment with the update, demanding their governments, education ministers and the examination board review the decision and cancel O and A Level exams in other countries as well. In Pakistan, candidates registered for the upcoming May/June 2021 session have also been making noise on the internet.
The government needs to recognize that nothing is normal with the education sector. Students' lives and study routines have been disrupted once and again. Online schooling has not worked for everyone similarly. Many have missed significant periods of learning.#cancelcieexams2021

A user also explained the impact of the pandemic on students’ mental health.
(1/3) from an academic POV: 2021 students suffered the most adjusting to online learning, many courses havent been completed and our mental heath has affected our studies as well. Depression and anxiety has become all too common amongst students during these tough times which…

Not to mention the disproportionate availability of resources amongst the youth to ensure their online learning is up to the standard required to do well in CAIEs. Even the most resourceful schools are struglling in that area.

A lot of us haven’t done well in the internal/online exams and we have our reasons. SOLID reasons. Some of us lost our parents, grandparents, closed ones, etc. Some of us were mentally not okay.

Students also voiced their concerns about how difficult it is to learn during online classes. Appeals are being made to Mahmood to review the government’s policies on O and A Level examinations, and to Cambridge International to review its global policy and make it more considerate and fair.
