Turkey Changes Its Name Officially To Turkiye At The United Nations

The UN declared on Thursday that Turkey has informed, at the request of its president, that it now desires to be referred to as "Turkiye" in all languages.

Ankara’s official letter demanding the modification was delivered at the United Nation’s Headquarters In new york city on Wednesday, he stated.

Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavasoglu had shared a photo of him signing the letter to United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres a day before.

“The change is immediate,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told AFP via email.

“We are certifying Turkey’s name in other dialects at the United Nations as ‘Turkiye,'” he wrote, with an umlaut above the “u.”

He went on to say that the shift will put an end to the process of “raising the brand image of our nation,” a project initiated by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, who has been in power for over two decades.

The Turkish government has attempted to modify the labelling of its goods from “made in Turkey” to “made in Turkiye” in recent years. The upgrade would help separate the nation from the bird that has the same name in the English language, as well as make the UN’s terminology resemble how the country is spelt in Turkish.

The New York Times reported Mustafa Aksakal, a professor from Georgetown University as stating, “The name change may sound foolish to some, but it places Erdogan in the position of guardian, of maintaining worldwide respect for Turkey.”

The decision comes on top of presidential elections that will be held next year in Turkey as well as the centennial of the country’s creation following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, according to the daily.
