Will History Repeat in This Year’s Monsoon in Karachi?
Last year, amid all the rain in Karachi, there were several live lost and people stood against it. Have things changed or we might see the history repeating?
Rains almost flooded Karachi in 2019. The much-anticipated system hit Karachi at the end of July, 2019, yet took people by shock. It was after a long time that people had witnessed such weather in the city. Their anticipations turned into horror when people started dying all around the city due to unattended electricity poles and wires. There were around 30-50 deaths reported all around the city from several different areas of Karachi. Obviously, people had to blame the responsible organization, Karachi Electric, who handles the electricity around the city. Where on the one hand people started abusing the organization, there, on the other hand, Zafar Abbas stood against the organization. There were protests, and later Zafar Abbas was called upon in the court for defamation.
Nevertheless, the people of Karachi were given assurance that nothing such will happen again. The mistake, made during the rains, was also not taken up by KE. Once again, strong pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons are about to hit Karachi. What people are fearing the most at the moment is the fact that nothing much has changed since the last year. There are questions, that will KE handle the situation this time, or people will have to lose lives once again? Will KE take responsibilities or will they not be helpful like always.
It is quite true, that managing electric wires during storms and rain isn’t an easy task. But rains take place globally. There are several other developed and under developing countries that are victims of storms and torrential rains, however, such cases are never reported there. But should we say that the organization lacks the resources or they are incapable, as both situations lead to loss of human lives?
We hope things are better, for a change, this time in Karachi.
