Armani announced on Thursday that they are going to start manufacturing single use medical overalls for hospital workers in their Italian factories. Founder Giorgio Armani has also donated €2 million ($2.2 million) in the previous few weeks to hospitals all over Italy, especially in the northern area which faced most of the brunt.
What Actions Have Other Brands Taken?
This is similar to Kering’s (YSL and Balenciaga) decision to produce masks in France. It announced that they will be following the strictest health protection measures for their workers. The production will go live as soon as they get the permission from the relevant authorities for manufacturing and procuring material. For now, however, they are importing three million masks from China. The group has also made a financial donation of an undisclosed amount to the Pasteur Institute, a private French non-profit, to support research for Covid-19.
Another design house under Kering, Gucci, plans to donate 1.1 million masks along with 55,000 protective medical gowns to help with Italy’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. They have already donated to hospitals across Italy struggling to control the pandemic, along with the Hubei Red Cross Foundation in China.
Their rival, LVMH, had also announced that they would be producing hand sanitisers and provide them to the health authorities.
I urge our designers and business-people to invest their time and resources to help the people in need as much as possible, like Armani has by producing single use medical overalls. This is our time to tackle COVID-19, and we shall do it together by playing our parts.
