ICYMI: Who is Darren Sammy, and why is he so loved in Pakistan?
The West Indian Cricketer is the only Captain who has won two T20 World Cups, and has captained Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League from 2017 until 2020, when he stepped down due to fitness.
During his time as the Captain of Peshawar Zalmi, Sammy has won the cup once, in Pakistan Super League 2. This year, however, the matches could not be completed as the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of the stadiums and we will never know if Darren Sammy could have led the team to its victory in his first year as their Head Coach.
He became the Head Coach of the Zalmis, having signed a two-year contract in early March after stepping down from playing the matches.
Darren Sammy has also received the honor of Nishan-e-Pakistan for his role in bringing back International Cricket to Pakistan, as well as having received an honorary citizenship of Pakistan.
I am truly honored to be given this civilian award. We took a small step in the right direction in 2017and look at us here today. All the foreign players played their part.Thank u Pakistan for the love shown to us.We only want U to experience cricket at home.#LOVEWINS https://t.co/BEVEJXmkH2
