Dengue Season is upon Us but No Fumigation in Karachi

The SMCP only fumigates certain areas of Karachi and KMC has not been able to conduct fumigation on its own even though peak season of dengue is upon us.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has been unable to launch a fumigation drive against dengue in Karachi which was supposed to start six months ago. It is alleged that this is due to Sindh Government not being able to provide insecticide to the local governments.

As the drive is already six months delayed and the sanitation is not up to the standards, there has been an increased breeding of dengue larvae.

One of the KMC officials stated that they were delayed this year because there is no cooperation from the Sindh Government. He added that the KMC is ready with the staff, vehicles and machinery but the provincial government is not providing them with insecticide.

According to the official, it is the Sindh Malaria Control Programme (SMCP) responsibility to purchase and distribute the insecticide amongst the districts, but they haven’t done their duty for the past couple of years.
