First Case of Covid-19 Omicron Variant Was Reported in Pakistan

The first case of the Omicron variant was reported in Karachi on Thursday. The woman was admitted to Agha Khan and is now isolated at her home.

Sindh Health Department’s, Mehar Khursheed confirmed the first case of Covid-19 Omicron Variant in Agha Khan, Karachi. The patient is a 65-year-old female with no recent travel history.

According to Karachi East District Health Office, the woman was discharged from Agha Khan and is now isolated at home. She was also unvaccinated upon admission. Preventative actions were taken immediately according to the directions provided by National Command and Operation Centre. And people around her in the last few days have been also contacted to be checked and prevent the infection of the Omicron variant from spreading.

Qasim Siraj Soomro, Sindh Parliament Health Secretary, said that Omicron is going to come soon to Pakistan because flights are continuing except for some countries. Pakistan banned travel to and from Hong Kong and six African countries – Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, and Mozambique on the 27th of November. And later nine more countries – Slovenia, Croatia, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Ireland, and Hungary were added to the travel ban list. And 13 countries – Russia, United States, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Germany, Azerbaijan, Mexico, Thailand, France, Austria, Afghanistan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turkey were put in the B category, where authentic vaccination certificates are needed for adults and 48 hours negative PCR test for children.

Two relatives of the patient were also found positive for the Covid-19 virus however they were not infected with the Omicron variant.

Omicron is a highly mutated variant of the Covid-19 virus, this makes the PCR tests of the people infected with Omicron come negative.
