Following Messages, Internet Might Open in Kashmir

For more than 4 months, internet services have been shut down in Kashmir, amid the escalation of tensions in the region. The government is now reconsidering

Since the 5th of August, things have been bad for Kashmiris. Their special status was stripped off them. Since then, they have been living a life of misery. From human rights violation to basic communication, all have been breached by the Indian Army. There was no communication between Kashmiris and their relatives in other countries. The internet was shut down, as the Modi government feared communication would lead to tension. And obviously, he even more feared the Muslims communicating and revolting against him. However, what he did was against he telecommunication rights, that every citizen has. Well, isn’t that what he has been doing since long?

Kashmiris protest against internet shutdown.

On Friday, Indian Supreme Court told that communication was every citizen’s constitutional right. According to the court, the shutting of internet in Kashmir is ‘unconstitutional’. According to the Hindu Times, Indian SC said that “Freedom of speech and expression includes right to internet within Article 19 of the Constitution. So the restrictions on internet has to follow the principles of proportionality under Article 19(2)”.

The internet shutdown did cause economic loss. But was also dangerous for human life, apparently. Even hospitals weren’t provided with internet. Different payments were on hold and different issues rose because of this. It is yet to see when they open up the internet there.

Human rights, alongside telecommunication rights, have also been violated in Kashmir. No food for hungry people, no education for the kids and no safety of human life. This is what Kashmir is about. The sooner it gets over, the better it is for all.
