Karachi, the Bustling City Comes to a Halt Amidst Rain

What do the citizens want from the government? To be able to live peacefully regardless of natural phenomenons.

It’s no secret that the city of Karachi never sleeps. However, this year, it has suffered a lot. At first, it was the pandemic due to which the city and its residents faced losses. The poor were crushed because of the lockdown and lack of work for people working on daily wages. This year, overall, has been a difficult one yet, but there’s more to it. We thought we had enjoyed the rain this year until there were more systems discovered.

It is reported that on Tuesday, over 80% of the markets in Karachi suffered significant loss due to being closed. The roads remained flooded with water which prevented most of the working class from reaching their workplaces. Many markets in different parts of the city were swamped, such as the Nursery furniture market, where the workers were on the verge of drowning in the waist-deep water. They also reportedly mentioned a loss of millions as most of the furniture was ruined.

Major city markets such as Bolton Market, Saddar Bohri Bazar, Joriya Bazar, Motandas Market, Juna Market, remained closed on Tuesday as well as electronics, paper, cloth, and utensil markets in the old city area.

The hustling and bustling city seems to have come to a halt because of rain. The question is why? It’s a natural phenomenon that no human can control, but precautionary measures can be taken to ensure prevention from damage in any way or form. This is where the government has failed us, the citizens and the residents of this city.

The government and all the responsible authorities were aware of the harsh monsoon spells well ahead of time. In order to prevent the sewage system from failing and roads being flooded with rainwater, there had to be proper planning done prior to the downpour. Rain emergency was declared hours after the damage had occurred.

What do the citizens want from the government? To be able to live peacefully regardless of natural phenomenons. Almost every country enjoys rainy weather, but in Karachi, it honestly is no less than torture. One can’t go out and enjoy, and if someone is out, then they’re most likely to be stuck outside. Goodluck going home if you’re at work and live even fifteen minutes away because it’ll take you double the amount of time to reach back. Everyone just dreads going out in such weather when we all should be enjoying and taking a break from everything that has been going on since the start of the year.
