Pakistan’s pride, Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has received a lifetime achievement award and honorary membership of the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi. The award was presented at a small ceremony in the council’s Jaun Elia lawn on Tuesday, March 16 evening.

Speaking on the auspicious event, the council’s president, Ahmed Shah went down his memory lane to tell the attendees how humble a person Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is. He spoke about the time when the vocalist performed at a concert at the venue for the first time and how too many people wanted to gatecrash it. So much so that the deputy commissioner at the time remarked that even if the prime minister wanted to come to the gig, he wouldn’t be able to enter it. He said there was also a time in Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s life when he didn’t have enough money to buy basic food for himself.

Before Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Zia Mohyeddin, Anwar Maqsood, Iftikhar Arif and Amar Jaleel have received a lifetime achievement award, however, the singer is the first from the world of music.

Khan was just three years old when he took his first lesson in music and only seven when he started to get training in classical music. He has come out with 50 albums and is also the recipient of the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (2015).

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan thanked the council for giving him the award and membership and complying with the request from the public, sang his song ‘Mera paigham Pakistan’.
