The Grammys: Racist, Rigged & Corrupt

The 2021 Grammy Awards Nominations have been announced and, as usual, there was plenty of snubbing; most shocking of which was The Weeknd's complete shutout.

This is not the first time the Recording Academy is receiving backlash after releasing the nominations for their ‘prestigious’ Grammy Awards. However, this year several artists have spoken out, exposing the Academy of being racist, corrupt and rigged.

Although every year plenty of artists are snubbed, this year, however, the most shocking was The Weeknd’s complete shutout. His record-breaking 2020 album “After Hours” and his chart-topping single “Blinding Lights” both were snubbed completely, triggering shock waves throughout the music industry and social media. The snub left everyone wondering how an artist so successful with critics could be ignored for the industry’s ‘most prestigious prize’ while artists like Justin Bieber were showered with nods for singles like “Yummy”.

The Weeknd did not hesitate to expose the Grammys on his social media.

His “After Hours” has accumulated more than 1.7 billion streams since its release — enough to make it the third-best-selling album of the year. Moreover, his record-breaking single “Blinding Lights,” has been charting in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 since February.

“For The Weeknd, in every year you only have a certain amount of people you can nominate for each category,” said the Recording Academy’s interim president and CEO, Harvey Mason.

Back in January, Deborah Dugan, CEO spoke for the first time since the Recording Academy put her on administrative leave. She termed the Grammys as a “boys’ club” where votes were manipulated by “secret committees”.

“It’s mostly white males that are in those rooms that make these decisions, and there’s a conflict of interest,” she said in a separate interview on CBS breakfast show This Morning.

Here Nicki Minaj’s long-standing claim of the Academy being racist becomes evident. The record-breaking artist has been snubbed of receiving a single grammy despite being the highest-charting female artist in HISTORY across all genres. Her list of achievements are beyond the scope of being included in this article, nevertheless, she has been blackballed by the Grammys for over a decade.

On her radio show, Queen Radio, earlier this year, the female rapper, after a decade of being bullied by the Academy, exposed them and revealed why she has been getting snubbed of Grammy nominations and awards.

Furthermore, last year, Ariana Grande exposed the Grammy producer, Ken Ehrlich, after he lied about why she pulled out of performing at the ceremony.

In a thread of tweets, Grande responded, “I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me, I can pull together a performance overnight and you know that, Ken. it was when my creativity & self-expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend. I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.”

“I offered 3 different songs,” she continued in the thread. “It’s about collaboration. it’s about feeling supported. it’s about art and honesty. not politics. not doing favours or playing games. it’s just a game y’all.. and I’m sorry but that’s not what music is to me.”

Katy Perry is another majorly-snubbed artist who hasn’t received any awards despite being nominated 13 times over the last 10 years.

Every year the number of artists revealing the mistreatment they face by the Recording Academy, increases. Moreover, with Deborah Dugan, someone who has been part of the decision-makers committee, exposing the Grammys with evidence, goes to prove that the award ceremony is in fact, rigged, racist and corrupt.
